Most residents don't have the ability or inclination to recycle yard waste. On a small scale it can be very time consuming. If the county collected yard waste on a regular basis this would greatly reduce the solid waste entering the landfill. According to waste360.com, yard waste is the third largest component of solid waste in landfills. It is a wasted resource. The yard waste could be composted by the county and offered back to residents for mulch or soil enhancers. The compost would be free to residents.
A green trash can be utilized to collect yard waste. Each residence would be required to have a green trash can. If they filled the bin 6 times a year, then they would have use of the bin free of charge for the year. An efficient collection schedule could be devised to reduce costs. This would increase the community's awareness of our environment, promote the community as environmentally friendly, save us money, extend the life of the landfill, and improve the environment.
