RESIDENT DEPUTY PROGRAM
Due to increasing calls for service and the lack of patrol hours in the Sheriffs’ Office, some of the surrounding communities have hired deputies on their off duty time for a limited number of hours to provide patrols in their communities. These deputies are able to give attention to the communities when they hold special events such as Hebron Days, and the Pigger Softball Tournament in Pittsville. As of August 1, 1997, Mardela Town Commissioners voted to have their resident deputy program discontinued.
EXTRA DUTY ASSIGNMENTS
In 2004, the deputies of the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office worked a total of 10,440.5 hours providing security for special activities. These assignments are funded from the individual users and are not funded from the Sheriff’s Office operating budget. They include but are not limited to: School athletic events and dances, DWI and agressive driving enforcement, as well as airport security.
CHAPLAIN PROGRAM
The Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office has two volunteer chaplains on staff, Rev. Howard F. Travers and Rev. G. William Hoffman. They have attended the Citizen’s Police Academy in an effort to familiarize themselves with this agency. As part of this program, they make themselves available to the community by riding along with a deputy at least once a week.
Their usefulness has proved invaluable in incidents such as, but not limited to, death notifications or in times where a life has been traumatically taken. These Chaplains provide emotional support to family members of those victims and in some cases, witnesses of those events.
