Wicomico County
currently owns and operates the Newland Park Landfill (NPLF) located on Brick Kiln Road, northwest
of the city of Salisbury, Maryland. The site covers
approximately 125 acres. The facility on a daily average processes 290
tons of solid waste along with a regional recycling facility that processes
recyclable materials for end users. In addition, it also operates 11
Transfer Stations, (that accept recyclables) and 9 Recycling Convenience
Drop-Off Stations. Transfer Stations are for the use of homeowners to
dispose of their household garbage and recyclables. A permit is required
for the disposal of household garbage, whereas no permit is required to deposit
recyclable materials in our recycling containers located in our Transfer and
Convenience Drop-Off Stations. Permits are issued each fiscal year (July
1 to June 30). The permit fee for FY
2008/2009 is $55.00. Permits will be pro-rated
in January 2009, at a fee of $30.00. Permits are sold only to
residents of Wicomico
County. Year-round
residents must show proof of residence (such as driver’s license).
Seasonal residents must show proof of ownership of a vacation or second home in
Wicomico County
(such as Wicomico
County property tax
bill). A separate application must be obtained for each home. No more
than two permits (stickers) will be allowed for one household for a total fee
of $55.00. The permits are assigned only to vehicles of the applications
address. A non-motorized trailer does not need a permit, but the
vehicle pulling it does. Permit Stickers must be stuck on the assigned
vehicles. No one will be allowed to carry
stickers in wallets, purses or displayed in plastic see-thru pouches. The permit allows the resident to use, with
no further charge, the household waste transfer stations only. A tipping
fee will be charged for any solid waste disposed of directly at the Newland
Park Landfill located on Brick
Kiln Road in Salisbury.
Citizens who seldom use these transfer stations have an option of not buying
these stickers. Instead, they can go to the landfill located on Brick Kiln Road go
across the scales and pay the tipping fee in cash based on their weight at the
rate of $55.00 per ton.
The Solid Waste Division is operated under the enterprise
fund and none of the funding to run this division comes from county general
taxes.
