Wicomico County Council Appoints Three New Members to the Board of Education

At the September 5, 2017 Wicomico County Council meeting, the County Council unanimously voted to appoint Allen C. Brown, Sr., Michael G. Murray and William K. Turner to the Wicomico County Board of Education.  The three new members will assume their seats on the Board as soon as they can be sworn in by the Clerk of the Circuit Court’s office.

The Wicomico County School Board Nominating Commission submitted six names for Council to consider for appointment.  The County Council conducted interviews of each of the six candidates and held a public hearing on August 15th to receive public comment on the proposed nominees.

President John T. Cannon said, “Since the voters chose to have an Elected School Board this past election cycle, the Wicomico County Council has gone to great lengths to establish guidelines and procedures for the county’s new Elected School Board System.  Part of the Council’s charge was to establish a new Wicomico County School Board Nominating Commission to begin the public process of recommending replacements for any pending Board of Education vacancies.  This first test came rather quickly as the Council found itself, within this first year, responsible for setting up a Commission to begin the appointment process for a total of three new members needed to replace retiring School Board Members.  This September 5th decision was a culmination of months of hard work on the part of the County Council, its staff and the newly formed Wicomico County School Board Nominating Commission, headed by their chairman, Mr. Ben Brumbley.”

The terms of the members on the Wicomico County Board of Education will expire on December 2, 2018, as the Board transitions to a fully elected school board.
