Wicomico County 150 Year Celebration


Wicomico County is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year, and for this sesquicentennial occasion, the County has planned a variety of events and promotions. Residents and visitors are invited to take part in the County’s 150 Year Celebration.

Historical Pub Tour

Downtown Salisbury, in conjunction with 3rd Friday
Friday, Sept. 15
Tours begin at 5:30 p.m., 6 p.m. & 6:30 p.m. Tours take approximately 1 hour.
Costumed tour guides and reenactors will narrate the last 150 years of Wicomico County history on this walking tour through downtown Salisbury. Reenactments include Camp Upton, the Civil War Encampment in Salisbury, the great fire of 1886 at Toadvine's Livery, and a meet and greet with the Handy's from Pemberton Hall Plantation. Pub stops include Market Street Inn, Roadie Joe's and the Brick Room.
Participation is free! Participants ages 21+ receive a wristband for drink specials at participating pubs. All participants receive a swag bag filled with goodies and coupons to local businesses.
Register on site in front of the courthouse. Each tour is limited to 50 participants.

Brothers of the Brush Contest

This facial hair growing contest is being held in commemoration of Wicomico County's 150 Year Celebration, reminiscent of the facial hair growing contest held in 1967 for the County's Centennial celebration. Categories include moustache, partial beard, full beard, most unusual and worst beard. There's also a fastest growing beard category, for which participants had to be clean-shaven on or after June 3. This contest is open to the public and participation is free! 
Registration has been extended, but space is limited. Each category will be capped at 20 entries.
Judging will take place on Friday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. in downtown Salisbury, in conjunction with 3rd Friday.
Contestants must check in at the Brothers of the Brush table near the Government Office Building between 6-6:45 p.m.
Judging will begin at 7 p.m. on the steps of the Government Office Building.
All registered contestants will receive a Brothers of the Brush t-shirt.
Winners in each category will receive a plaque and swag bag filled with gift certificates and other goodies.

Wicomico County Courthouse Uplighting

Join Greater Salisbury Committee as they uplight the historic Wicomico County Courthouse for the first time.

Greater Salisbury Committee Gala
On Saturday, Sept. 16, the Greater Salisbury Committee, which is observing its’ 50th year in service to the community, is hosting a black-tie optional gala to celebrate Wicomico County and its’ 150th Celebration. The gala will be held at Salisbury University, in the Academic Commons. Tickets can be purchased through the Greater Salisbury Committee website.

West Wicomico Heritage Day
Saturday, Sept. 23
Pemberton Historical Park
West Wicomico Heritage Day features the 22nd annual West Wicomico Heritage Bike Tour, the Historians Scavenger Hunt, guided tours of the History Trail and an open house at Pemberton Hall, including a special 150 Year Celebration exhibit. Nabb Research Center for Delmarva History & Culture: Wicomico at 150 Exhibit

Salisbury University's Guerrieri Academic Commons
The Nabb Research Center will be celebrating Wicomico County's 150th anniversary with an exhibit in the Guerrieri Academic Commons. The exhibit is on display in the first floor of the GAC from June 12 - July 28. It will then be moved to the fourth floor until the end of September. The exhibit space is open during regular building hours. The display will feature photographs highlighting people and places of the past, fun facts about some of the cities and towns throughout the county, and a glimpse into the centennial celebration in 1967 – they went all out!

The Nabb Center also has copies of the book "At the Crossroads: The Architectural History of Wicomico County, Maryland" by Paul Touart available for $25, and "Wicomico County History" by George H. Corddry available for $10. Click here for more information.

The 150th anniversary will also be celebrated at Wicomico County’s annual signature events, with special promotions at the Good Beer Festival on Oct. 14-15 and the Autumn Wine Festival on Oct. 21-22.
